doc.tw.o 2 -> 1 column & new homepage: who?

If I understood the Editorial Board process (Editorial Board Meeting April 2007), we should be changing 2 lateral column setting for just left lateral column on doc.tw.o, as well as changing the homepage.

Is that right or did I miss anything?
Who is supposed to do that?
(I could do it, but since I'm not sure if I'm missing any process before decision taking, I preffer asking here first... 😊

I believe you are right about those changes, but am not sure who will make them. dthacker will be making the May editorial board meeting soon, I think.

As the two side columns are reduced to one, I wonder if the number of modules could/should be reduced. I think the "Last articles" module might be redundant since the most recent articles are shown on the front page.

If it passed the board, please go ahead. That will let me stay on writing and editing. Thanks!

Done removing right column.
I haven't replaced the homepage since Gary (chibaguy) is finishing a new Theme style for doc.tw.o (see his post - Proposal of Mittwoch theme - or the full thread: full thread)

I'm not sure where to post this as the current editorial board meeting page isn't up yet, but I was working on a Tiki adaptation of a theme and thought it might be a good fit for doc.tw.o.

So far it's only on my laptop, so I can't offer a live demo yet, but here's a screenshot:

http://zukakakina.com/show_image.php?id=37 (It's a .gif so the background image gradients are shown blockier than in real life.)

and here's a demo of the original template:

http://x-use.net/z/index.php and choose the "Mittwoch" theme. The Tiki version works the same, pretty much. The top links can be hard-coded or a PHP Layers menu.

The site logos need to be reworked of course. And there are other details that need to be worked out. As with most Tiki adaptations of templates for simpler sites, there are lots of places where choices have to be made on things the original author never had to think about, so it'd be good to have input. Things can be adjusted as necessary.

I'd be happy to finish this theme up and provide it for doc.tw.o. Or if theme-switching is turned on for the site, it could be one of the choices.

If people have other designs in mind for the site, that's OK too. I wanted to do this theme and will upload it to themes.tw.o one eventually.

I've been working on it with 1.9.8, so there'll be some work to do to get it 1.10 compatible (if this site gets upgraded to 1.10), but I'll need to do that anyway.

Let me know what you think. It can be ready to use fairly soon.

Brilliant, Gary! Congratulations! I like it a lot! (good election... and new homepage looks very pretty with this new theme!)

Cheers,
Xavi

P.S: Besides, I would wish that the default theme in tiki 1.10 (whenever it's released) is something fancier than tikineat... many people go to joomla's or similars initially because they are fancier, and only some of them come back to Tiki when they lack some powerful features (as they are well integrated in Tiki...) but anyways, I know that this a another story...

The latest work on the Mittwoch theme can be seen at
http://zukakakina.com/tiki-switch_theme.php?theme=mittwoch.css. I'm pretty pleased that font size and color scheme can both be selected by the user. I guess some spirit is watching out for me because I more or less stumble onto solutions for these things and somehow work them out without really knowing the fundamentals very well but, hey, whatever works. 😉

The colors still need to be adjusted. Especially the table header backgrounds seem too bright. I tested first locally on my laptop, then at Zukakakina.com, and I guess if all goes well and people's suggestions can be integrated, the files can be uploaded to doc.tw.o and we can do the final testing. I'd sort of been aiming for this to be ready at the 1.9.8 release time.

So please give any comments you have. There is still adjusting to be done.

Brilliant, Gary, so far what I've seen (tested on firefox).
Just one comment: I would stick to the "A+" and "A-", for changing font size, since the heads of the arrows are very difficult to see..., and many people is used to "A+" and "A-" type of sign.

Thanks for the nice remarks. The main thing still to be done is to adjust the colors — especially link colors and table header backgrounds. I generally work on a laptop and luci pointed out that the colors are mostly too bright, which I agree about especially after looking with a desktop CRT display.

The files have to be cleaned up and there may be other things to fix/change, too, (like the font-changing text), and in a few days I can get back to work on this.
